Learn to Skate Program Registration Requirements

Canskate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program designed for beginners of all ages. The program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. We are excited to begin our winter programs and hopefully your child will enjoy this year by having fun while he/she learns to skate!

Our programs will start the week of October 8, 2018 and run until March 8, 2019. There will be no skating during Christmas break between December 22 and January 6.

PreCanskate sessions will be held once a week on Wednesdays OR Fridays from 5:40-6:20pm on Rink B.

Canskate sessions will be held twice a week on Wednesdays AND Fridays from 5:40-6:20 pm on Rink B.

On your child’s first day, they will receive their name tag sticker which will be placed on their helmet. Name tags will be set up in the Rink B lobby when you first arrive. All skaters must have a name tag before going on the ice. Skaters will be placed in a group according to their skating ability. Assessment is on-going, therefore skaters may be moved to different groups throughout the season.

A parent/guardian must remain near the ice surface during each session in case of emergencies such as bathroom breaks/equipment issues etc.

All parents and spectators must watch their skaters from the designated viewing areas, behind the glass or on the bleachers, and not from the hockey players’ bench. All skaters must enter and exit the ice by using the doors at the end of the rink and should only enter the rink once coaches/program assistants allow them on the ice.

Safety and Equipment

* CSA approved helmets with a facemask are MANDATORY. Your child will not be allowed

on the ice without this.

* Please dress your skater in comfortable clothing that is warm but not restrictive to the skater’s movements (bending down, getting up etc.) Mittens are a must but please no scarves or dangling materials.

* Skates should have good ankle support for safety against breaks/sprains/strains as well as to maintain proper ankle support for optimal skill development.

* Please maintain the quality of skate blades. Blades that are dull or rusty are often slippery on the ice, so keeping skate blades dry and sharpened will be beneficial to your skater’s learning abilities.

* No street shoes or boots are allowed on the ice surface. Parents are not allowed on the ice surface.

* Please use the dressing rooms that have been assigned for Canskate/PreCanskate. This changes every day and should be posted on the large white boards in the main lobby and rink B lobby.

NOTE: As mentioned on the Registration’s Rules and Regulations, skaters who wish to withdraw from the program up to and including the 3rd week may do so, and receive a refund, less administration and Skate Canada costs. After the 3rd week, no refunds will be issued unless accompanied by a Doctor’s Certificate.
