Pre-CanSkate is for young children usually aged 2-5 who have never been on skates before or have limited movement on skates. The main focus is to provide the skaters with confidence while they learn very basic skating skills such as balance, moving forwards and backwards as well as turning and stopping progressions that are taught through fun and games. Lessons are delivered in a group format.
This program currently runs once a week for 40 minutes on Wednesdays OR Fridays 5:40pm-6:20pm.
CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. It is a nationally standardized program for ages 3 and up that teaches fundamental movements and basic skating skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. This Program has been developed and improved upon for over 50 years by our national organization, Skate Canada.
CanSkate is for beginners of all ages as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skating skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating or just skating for fun.
The program is taught by NCCP-trained professional coaches and assisted by trained program assistants. Coaches are nationally certified and trained specifically in teaching the mechanics and proper technique of skating. The Program Assistants (PAs) are volunteers who train annually and assist the coaches with the delivery of the program on-ice. These volunteers, usually skaters, have mastered the CanSkate program skills and continue to share their love of the sport.
CanSkate consists of a complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses a nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.
Canskate is full of ACTION, MOVEMENT and FUN! Lessons are delivered in a group format. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active by using circuits, teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.
Most of all, Canskate introduces a healthy, lifelong activity at an early age and promotes fun, fitness and participation.
This program currently runs twice a week for 40 minutes on Wednesdays AND Fridays 5:40pm-6:20pm.
The Advanced CanSkate program (previously called Intermediate) is for skaters in CanSkate working on stages 2-6.
