We offer the following programs throughout our Winter Season. Click PreCan or Canskate for a full description of the programme.
Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – this is what STARSkate is all about!
Sr. A skaters are working on STARSkate and Star 1-5 which offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.
This program runs 3 days a week.
Jr. A is for skaters that have passed the six stages of Canskate and are entering into the StarSkate program. These skaters are usually working on Star 1 and 2.
Jr. A usually skates twice weekly for 2 hours each with the Sr. A program.
Our Intermediate program is for skaters in Canskate working on stages 2-6 that show an interest for Figure Skating. While we continue to teach the fundamental skills of each Canskate stage, skaters are also introduced to the structure of a figure skating class.
Intermediate runs twice a week usually Thursday's for 70 minutes and Friday's for 50 minutes.
Our Sr. B program is an extension of our Intermediate program and is for skaters in Canskate Stage 5 and 6. This program skates with the Intermediates as well as an extra 30 minutes on Sr. A ice to introduce them to our figure skating program.
Our Pre-Canskate program offers the perfect introduction to skating. This program is for young children usually aged 2-5 who have never been on skates before or has limited movement on skates. The main focus of this program is to provide the skaters with confidence while they learn vary basic skating skills such as balance, forward and backward skating as well as turning and stopping progressions that are taught through fun and games. Once skaters show some control in these skills they will join our Canskate program to build upon and further master these basic skills.
This program runs once weekly for 40 minutes, usually Sunday afternoon. Please see details about our program requirements for more information.
CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. It is a nationally standardized program for ages 3 and up that teaches fundamental movements and basic skating skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. This Program has been developed and improved upon for over 50 years by our national organization, Skate Canada.
Canskate is for beginners of all ages as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skating skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating or just skating for fun.
The program is taught by NCCP-trained professional coaches and assisted by trained program assistants. Coaches are nationally certified and trained specifically in teaching the mechanics and proper technique of skating. The Program Assistants (PAs) are volunteers who train annually and assist the coaches with the delivery of the program on-ice. These volunteers, usually skaters, have mastered the CanSkate program skills and continue to share their love of the sport.
Canskate consists of a complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses a nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.
Canskate is full of ACTION, MOVEMENT and FUN! Lessons are delivered in a group format. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active by using circuits, teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.
Most of all, Canskate introduces a healthy, lifelong activity at an early age and promotes fun, fitness and participation.
Our Canskate Program runs twice a week for 40 minutes each. Usually Sunday and Thursday afternoons.
